AMD's Response to Nvidia's RTX Super Launch: A Breakdown

AMD's Response to Nvidia's RTX Super Launch: A Breakdown

Kudos to AMD for making a bold move today, especially with Nvidia unveiling the much-anticipated RTX 4070 Super. It seems like AMD had a counter-strategy ready, and it's a big one – a substantial price reduction on one of its top-tier graphics cards in this generation. Coincidence? Definitely not. But the question remains, will this price cut be sufficient when Nvidia introduces the RTX 4070 Ti Super?

The GPU taking the spotlight in this price cut saga is AMD's RX 7900 XT, now sporting an official price tag of $750, with some models going as low as $710. Initially hitting the market at $900, it struggled to outshine AMD's other flagship, the RX 7900 XTX, which, priced just $100 higher, offered significantly improved performance. As a result, the RX 7900 XT found itself somewhat overshadowed in AMD's lineup. Its price swiftly dropped to $800 and even lower at select retailers.

While the gradual decline in price over the past year may somewhat dilute the impact of this cut, on paper, the card has gone from $900 to nearly $700 in just 13 months. Priced around $710, it emerges as a competitive alternative to the new RTX 4070 Super, outperforming the Nvidia counterpart across various resolutions.

However, introducing DLSS 3 and ray tracing into the equation brings a twist to the narrative. In our testing, running Cyberpunk 2077 on ultra settings at 4K, with ray tracing enabled and DLSS 3 activated, the RTX 4070 Super delivered 77.5 frames per second (fps), leaving the RX 7900 XT trailing at 18 fps. This, though, highlights the prowess of Nvidia's DLSS 3 rather than the capabilities of the new GPU itself.

The real challenge for AMD may arise when the RTX 4070 Ti Super hits the market, boasting new specs and an $800 price tag. Expected to perform on par with the RTX 4080 (non-Super), it may surpass the RX 7900 XT in all scenarios. At $800, the RX 7900 XT might find itself in an awkward position – not quite budget-friendly yet not powerful enough to be a must-have.

Nevertheless, if DLSS 3 isn't a game-changer for you, the current discounts on the RX 7900 XT are enticing. You can save $50 to $100 compared to purchasing the RTX 4070 Ti Super when it becomes available. Keep in mind, though, this price cut on the RX 7900 XT might just be a seasonal promotion, not a permanent reduction, according to TweakTown. So, act fast before AMD changes its mind. Happy gaming!
