A top League of Legends developer recently spoke out about the changes made to Aurelion Sol, expressing that they were mishandled and that the champion is now slightly stronger.
Aurelion Sol has always been a bit of a challenge for Riot to balance. Before his rework, he wasn't played much because his kit felt clunky and his power levels were inconsistent. However, after the rework, the star dragon became more popular. Yet, his increased mobility and scaling made him much trickier to keep in check.
Adding to the complexity is Aurelion Sol's significance in the game's lore. If he's not in a good place, what does that say about the state of Runeterra?
But the recent round of changes, which notably increased Aurelion Sol's stacks using his Q ability, pushed him so far up the ladder that he needed immediate adjustments.
Riot recently posted a reflection on some of the recent changes to League on Twitter. Lead Game Designer Riot Phroxzon admitted, "Asol – our bad on this one. Clearly we overshot on balance and we own that (underestimated how much the W buff did specifically). Post-nerf, we still believe Asol is stronger than pre-buff though."
The motivation behind the changes was to reward Aurelion Sol players for being proactive in lane. However, they realized that boosting his fragging power from his W ability, instead of focusing on stacks that enhance his scaling fantasy, resulted in unsatisfactory gameplay.
Phroxzon also mentioned that the developers were keeping an eye on bot lane Maokai, who benefited greatly from some of the new support items, along with Illaoi and Wukong in the top lane.
